In response to new technologies, many areas of specialization have evolved within the profession to. The scope of practice includes collection and processing of specimens, performance of a broad range of analytical procedures, quality control, and reporting of test results. Medical laboratory sciences is a very diversified field. Those working in small laboratories may work more regular business hours, though they may occasionally work overtime to finish running time-sensitive tests. The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) perform laboratory tests on body fluids and tissues which aid in the diagnosis of disease and management of health. Medical scientists working in larger laboratories, particularly those attached to hospitals, may be required to work shifts, which include working nights, weekends and public holidays. The hours of work can vary, depending on the size of the laboratory. They work closely with blood and infectious specimens, so must take care to follow strict safety procedures to minimise the risk of contamination. There may also be limited opportunities to work in specialist veterinary diagnostic laboratories. What Is a Medical Laboratory Technologist Medical laboratory technologists often collect samples of body fluids, tissues, and other substances from patients, test and analyze them, and discuss their findings with physicians.
